Freeland’s marathon end of season fixture congestion continued with another 2 games in 3 days. The first being against nearest rivals and title favourites Hinksey. The largest crowd of the season of some 150 people watched the teams play some good football, but with both sides showing the signs of the gruelling schedule the tempo was quite low. The home side had the better of the opening chances, with Pint sized pest Taylor and Hodges both going close. Somewhat against the run of play Hinksey opened the scoring when Craig Bloomfield latched onto a through ball and beat the advancing keeper Leach. Freeland seemed shocked at going behind and started to loose their composure on the ball, hurrying passes, panicking and reverting to long hopeful balls. Hinksey continued to press and were hurrying Freeland with some good pressure and tough tackles. The second half saw the home side perform with a bit more composure and self belief, and soon found themselves level when some excellent work between crowd favourite Adam Reynolds and Danny Taylor, saw Taylor’s fantastic ball find Brooks who calmly slotted home from 20 yards. Despite being level of goals, on terms of possession and chances the home side were always second best and it was no surprise when the champions elect regained the lead when Wayne Desmond fired home. Freeland then on in didn’t really create any other chances and the away side held on, and on the final whistle charged onto he pitch to undignified scenes of champagne spraying and songs. There was no shame on the home side loosing to a very good Hinksey side, but the way in which they did will disappoint gaffer Longford and the fans alike.
Saturday saw Freeland try and put the disappointment of Thursday nights game behind them as they played Middleton Cheney, a team they had beaten the Saturday before.
A tired and injury ravaged Freeland side play this home fixture at Ducklington due to the cricket match at Freeland.
The pace and tempo was again slow as both sides showed signs of fatigue with all the games they had recently played. The home side created chances but once again could not find the breakthrough and it was the away side who opened the scoring when Stuart White nipped in to score.
Soon after this Freeland were awarded a penalty and Gary Brooks stepped up and easily converted the spot kick. Neither side could gain the upper hand before half time.
The second half saw the home side once again fall behind when some poor defending saw White charge in at the far post to grab his second of the game.
Freeland gave a first team debut to 17 year old Ethan Simlet, who had started the season in the b team, but after some impressive performances progressed to the reserve team and gaffer Longford decided to give the young striker his first team debut. He repaid the managers faith when he controlled the ball on his chest and rolled the ball past the Cheney keeper.
A great end to the season for the promising youth teamer, who proved that good performances will be rewarded, and can look forward to a exciting second season in mens football.
