Freeland’s outstanding home record continued in the summer sun of the Si Hole memorial ground against visitors OUP reserves. Missing 4 regulars Freeland were forced into making changes, with the youth team filling the vacant spots.
It was the opening 20 minutes that took the game out of OUP’s reach, with Freeland starting strongly and seeing themselves 3 up in that time. After some good early pressure it was star winger Tom Miller who after a short corner danced and weaved his way into the box and his shot found the bottom corner.
Freeland’s second goal will give the OUP keeper nightmares for years to come, Chris “the eagle” Gilkes hit a speculative shot form the edge of the area and the ball trickled through to the keeper who went down to collect it but managed to let the ball run through his open legs and into the back of the net. The home fans in the Steve Lay stand did not let him forget and the away keeper had to endure chants of “are you Perkin in disguise” for the rest of the half.
Freeland continued their onslaught had with a mere 20 minutes gone were 3 goals ahead, some good interchange between midfield maestro Langford and Belcher, saw Belchers delicate lob beat the outrushing keeper and roll into the back of the net, to thunderous congratulations from his ecstatic teammates.
OUP were creating little up front, and the back line of Symonds, James and Veteran, and avid report reader Woodbridge were dealing with the little threat offered by the visitors.
The second half saw the home side continue their good pressure, but OUP were more organised having swapped the keeper and made 3 changes. In the heat the tempo was slowed down, and the game became scrappy, but it was the home side who further extended their lead when youth teamer Symonds scored on his debut.
Gilkes then scored his second and the home sides fifth when he fired home from close range. The visitors managed to grab a consolation when Parsons left keeper Shorter with no chance when he scored from 15 yards.
Freeland kept pushing for more goals and substitute striker Symonds nearly grabbed one when Lamberts deep cross found him at the far post, but a combination of the sun and a flick on from the defender meant there was little contact and the ball ran through to the keeper.
The home side can be pleased with the performance and the 3 points helps towards their push for a top 3 finish.
