Freeland travelled to Marston for their first game since December 12th. They were boosted by a near full strength squad, who were keen to get back to wining ways.
The visitors had the best of the opening exchanges trying to play some football on a good surface, Winger Scroggs was a constant threat down the left hand side, and the injury prone Ben “ Anderton” Glastonbury was a constant threat up front.
Full back Wick was as frantic as ever, and when not slicing the ball out of play, was bombing on to join the attack. The Marston forwards were not seeing much of the ball and when they had a sniff the Freeland back line were comfortably coping with it.
It was from Wick’s corner that Freeland took the league, when portly Welshman Glastonbury leapt above his marker to head home from close range.
Freeland then had a few good chances to increase there lead with Calley, Glastonbury and Langford all going close. Scroggs provided a cross having turned on a Jelly Tot and found the head of Langford whose glancing header whistled past the post.
The second half saw the home side play the better football and cause Freeland problems at the back. It was no surprise when the leveled.
Freeland were getting frustrated and stopped looking to play football which suited their hosts, who stepped up a gear and looked dangerous. Freeland can count themselves unlucky not to have been given a penalty when Langford was hauled down, but his screams were waved away by the referee.
They also had a chance from a free kick 20 yards out, but Scrapping womaniser Blackwater saw his effort sail over the bar.
It was no real surprise when Marston took the lead when some poor defending saw the striker waltz though the 18 yard box to beat Leach from close range.
In the final minutes Freeland pushed for an equalizer but could not produce any clear cut chances, and with virtually the last kick of the game the home side were awarded a penalty when Leach came rushing out and the centre forward went down in theatrical fashion. With the last kick of the game Leach saved the resulting penalty.
Freeland will hope to get back to wining ways when they host Long Crendon at the Si Hole Memorial Ground next week
