Freeland V Old Woodstock Town Res

Freeland travelled the short distance to Woodstock for this Intermediate Cup tie. The visitors were depleted by injuries meaning that gaffer and chief footballing tactician Matty Longford found himself in the starting line up. It also meant club carthorse Si Hole retained his place.

The visitors, having nothing to loose started playing with confidence and a carefree attacking brand of football. Freeland made all the running in the first 20 minutes creating numerous opportunities and rarely being threatened at the back.

They were rewarded for this early pressure when Freeland’s Neil Maskell crossed from the right and his pin point cross meant striker Salkeld did not have to break stride and his header found the roof of the net.

Things got better for the away side when Salkeld scored his and Freeland’s second when midfielder Brooks delightfully weighted through ball was latched onto by the tall striker and calmly slotted past the keeper. There was no gulf between the Hellenic side and the division one side representing the senior league.

The second half saw Woodstock throwing the Kitchen sink at Freeland and their persistence paid off with them drawing level though a strike apiece from their lively strikers. With the threat of extra time looming neither side wanted to make a mistake in the last few minutes, and the final minutes were played out in the middle of the park.

Extra time saw Freeland really go for the win and a lack of concentration by the home side saw veteran Pete Higgins score with a great strike. The senior league side then held out for the final minutes of extra time to run out 3-2 winners, and seal what was a great win and put Freeland back to winning ways in their last game of 2009.
