Freeland suffered their first ever senior league defeat at the fortress Si Hole Memorial Ground at the hands of Horspath Reserves. A patched up side saw regulars James, Blackwater and Sadler all missing.
On a pitch that was wet and sticky but thankfully clear of the reservoir conditions of the past two weeks, it was not going to be a day for pretty football. The home side dominated the early exchanges and were unlucky not to open the scoring when Ben Symonds’s superbly weighted through ball for Glastonbury saw him weave past the defender and beat the keeper only for his shot to rebound of the post.
Freeland kept up the pressure and had a succession of corners but could not make any of them count.Their dominance continued with Langford winning everything in the air and Glastonbury looking a constant threat.
It was against the run of play that Horspath opened up the scoring when Horspaths quick centre forward managed to bundle the ball in.
Almost immediately Freeland had a chance to get back in it when a throw from Ben Symonds found Langford in the box and his turn induced as reckless challenge and the ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Sam Symonds stepped up only to see the keeper to dive low to his right and keep out the kick.
After more pressure a free kick from the left found Langford unmarked and his glancing header beat the keeper. Within 5 minutes the home side again found them selves behind when Leach was beaten at his near post from a loss cross on the right.
The second half continued in much the same way as the first with Freeland causing all the problems, Glastonbury again was the main threat and Langford and Hardy were dominating the midfield. It was from a great free kick they got a deserved equaliser when Glastonbury fired to the top left corner from 30 yards.
The first half was mirrored when almost immediately Horspath again took the lead, when the striker was allowed to turn and shoot low into the bottom corner. For the next 20 minutes it was all Freeland as they went in search of a deserved equaliser, Sub Paton, Glastonbury all going close and Hardy seeing his fierce toe punt sailing just wide.
Freeland could not get the equaliser despite a late onslaught, but can be proud of the effort and commitment they put in and count themselves unlucky they did not get at least a point.
