Freeland Res v Horspath Res

The reserves travelled to the Horspath running track on another wet and windy day. The team was under strength missing Belcher, James and Wick. They had gained the industrious Hardy and Vandenberg who had returned from Australia.

Freeland started sluggishly and were second best in most departments, Horspath were lively and seemed much more up for it. They were creating chances after dominating the midfield.

The visitors were looking short of ideas, with the Horspath defence coping with everything thrown at them, which panicked them into not playing the football there are known for and they resorted to pumping it long to target man Langford.

Mid way through the half the home side took the lead, the Freeland defence was caught on the counter and keeper Leach had to commit himself and brought the striker down just on the edge of the box. From the resulting free kick, Horspath’s Belcher found himself unmarked and deflected the free kick into the net. Freeland were only really threatened from set pieces and Horspath pushed for a second before the break, but to no avail.

It was Horspath who opened the second half scoring when their midfielder ran unchallenged for 20 yards and then hit a low thunderous drive that found its way into the bottom corner. For the first time in the match Freeland then showed a bit of fight and tried to play some football. They managed to pull a goal back when Youngster Billy Webb grabbed his first for the club, when he bundled home and a melee in the goalmouth.

Freeland nearly drew themselves level when Blackwell had his shot wonderfully saved by the keeper and then the ball cannoned off the stanchion from the rebound. As Freeland chased the game Horspath wrapped up the 3 points when a defensive mix up lead to Woodbridge being tackled on the half way line and the striker running and putting his shot past the oncoming Leach.

It was another average performance from the reserves, who for the last month have been very inconsistent and with some big games coming up will have to up their game in the coming weeks.
