Freeland Res v Broughton & N Newington

Freeland travelled to Broughton to play only their third game of the season, which was the scene of their Senior League debut last year. Freeland were boosted by the return of Captain Andy "Hollywood" James and keeper Jamie Leach who had both been sunning themselves in previous weeks.

Freeland on the whole are generally slow starters, but what the travelling fans were about to witness in the first 45 minutes was described by Assistant Ben Symonds as "the worst ever reserve team performance in recent memory".

From the first whistle of the half Freeland were second best in every area of the pitch, they did not compete, shirked tackles, argued and generally ambled around as though they were on a gentle Sunday afternoon stroll.  It was no surprise when Broughton took the lead, when they opened up the Freeland midfield and defence and one on one with Leach the striker made no mistake.

Freeland continued to be second best, and were lacklustre and casual in their approach and within a matter of minutes found themselves 2 down. Broughton could not believe their luck, they were expecting a tough physical game against one of the better teams in the league and when they scored a third before half time the home fans were ecstatic.

At half time, Freeland decided to change the system to a traditional 4-4-2 and if they were to get anything out of the game had to race out of the blocks in the second half. This is exactly what they did, they started to win first and second balls, put in challenges and finally started to play football.

Scroggs was providing much of the attacking force on the left hand side and it was his hard work that set up Calley for Freeland’s first goal when he beat the keeper from 8 yards with the help of a slight deflection.

This finally fired up Freeland and from here on in it was all Freeland, Webb on the right was tormenting the full back and left back Wick was pushing on in support. They  got a second goal when Webb made a mazy run on the right wing and even when tackled managed to win the ball back form on the floor and when the ball was out in the box it found winger Scroggs who beat the keeper with an audacious overhead kick.

Freeland now sensed not only could they get a draw but even go on to win the game, Broughton had already started to time waste and were looking very nervous. Freeland seemed to be denied a clear penalty when Webb was set free by tough tacking Morris Smith, only to appear to be hauled down in the box. But a matter of minutes later it was Super Scroggs again who drew Freeland level when Langford managed to get the ball out from under his feet in a melee to find Scroggs who put the ball in from 5 yards out.

With ten minutes on the clock Freeland sensed the game was there for the taking and Broughton after being 3 up at half time were now clinging on for a draw. However Freeland could not find that vital 4th goal and had to settle for a point which at half time they would gladly of taken.

This was the ultimate Jekyll and Hyde performance from the young reserve team and if they forget about the diabolical first half performance and play like they did in the second half they will certainly beat most teams in their way.
