Freeland hosted fellow promoted side Marston at the Si Hole Memorial ground. The reserves were missing some big names such as Sadler, Langford, Leach and Hollywood. Making a first appearance of the season was club Chairman big D.
The opening exchanges saw Freeland dominate the game in all parts of the pitch; they should have found themselves at least two goals to the good when Glastonbury squandered two good chances. As it looked only a matter of time until Freeland would take the lead they were dealt a blow when completely against the run of play Marston took the lead, when they hit Freeland on the counter attack and striker Gordon -Weekes beat stand in keeper Scroggs.
Freeland’s heads dropped and Marston were now in the ascendancy. From the free flowing football and excellent passing they had played in the first ten minutes they were now all at sea. For all Marston’s possession they could not make it count by doubling their advantage.
Freeland managed to get back in the game when they found an equaliser through Belcher. Stand in Keeper Scroggs was mainly a spectator bar picking the ball out of the net, everything coming his way was dealt with comfortably.
The second half was a bit better with Freeland starting to up their game and try to impose themselves on the game. However, once again it was Marston who took the lead.
This led Freeland to change personnel and put Calley into centre midfield to add a bit of extra bite. Almost immediately fellow midfielder Blackwell picked up the ball just inside the Marston half and ran past two players then looked up and crisply struck the ball and with the speed of a horse drawn plough the ball eluded 3 defenders and left the keeper stranded as the ball rolled into the net.
This galvanised Freeland and they sprung to Life in the next session of play, when they finally took the lead in the game, a handball led scouse pest Evans to point to the spot. Stand in skipper Salkeld then ran 40 yards to garb the ball – reports are unconfirmed that he was heard shouting “I’m captain, my penalty”, the defender tan scored his first Freeland goal when he comfortably beat the Marston Keeper.
Shortly after the restart Glastonbury made a run on the Freeland right and was taken out right on the edge of the box, this left the striker writhing in pain and with a knee like an elephants. From the resulting Free Glastonbury put the ball in after a goalmouth scramble.
This seemed to demoralise Marston and the result was surely going to be another Freeland win, but Marston scored to make it 4-3 with a couple of minutes to go, to give Freeland’s management and fans nervy last 2 minutes.
Another average performance from Freeland saw them gain 3 points, and if we are playing like this and getting a win, when we start to put in the performances we know we can and should be putting in the reserves will be there or thereabouts come May
