Freeland v Yarnton

Freeland made the short trip to local rivals Yarnton for this division 1 clash. Freeland were missing Steve Walsh and Craig Hambridge due to some unexpected transportation issues and the Lesley Ash esque  Club Carthorse Simon Hole who was still suffering with elephant mans arm. Sex Pest Pete Higgins, a £15 million summer signing from Eynsham also made his league debut for the club

On a blistering hot day and rock hard pitch Freeland failed to start and Yarnton had the better of the opening play.It was no surprise when they took the lead, after a howler from keeper Jamie Perkin, whihc will surely lead the Freeland stopper to be spending the weekend practacing in the garden with Bob.

This woke Freeland up and finally they began to look to play football, they drew level 5 minutes later when Paul “I score Goals” Salter scored his 5th goal in 5 games. The stalemate continued with neither side playing particularly entertaining football much of it being a scrappy affair in the middle of the park. Freeland went into the break in the lead, but could hardly be assured of a win with the first half performance.

The second half started as the first had finished, with Freeland struggling to break down a spirited Yarnton side. The home side sensed Freeland were there for the taking and pushed for an equaliser and seceded when a free kick found Yarntons Stevens who headed home.

With the clock ticking down it looked like it would be a point a piece until a thunderbolt Matt Hambridge free kick  from 20 yards nearly broke the net, to the delight of the Freeland travelling fans.

It is said the sign of a good team is to play bad and still get 3 points, and this is exactly what Freeland did.

In the post match press conference gaffer Matty Longford said “ If we are to mount a serious challenge this year we have to pull our fingers out and put in some performances”
